Our Story
Building a Modern Engine for Cell-Specific Drug Discovery
Cartography Biosciences was founded by Kevin Parker, Ansu Satpathy, and Howard Chang who saw a fundamental gap in drug discovery: despite rapid advances in genomic and biological sciences, most new therapies were still built around the same, broadly expressed targets, resulting in limited efficacy and safety. Motivated to change this paradigm, our founders began building proprietary single-cell atlases from human tissues to create a detailed map of healthy and tumor biology at unprecedented scale.
What started as a discovery effort evolved into the ATLAS and SUMMIT platforms, integrating deep biological insight with therapeutic engineering. Today, Cartography combines these platforms with numerous computational tools and an expanding internal pipeline of clinical and preclinical programs, translating novel, cell-specific targets into differentiated oncology therapies.

Clinical Development
Annie Winterhall is the Head of Clinical Operations at Cartography.ย She brings more than 20 years of experience in leading global clinical development programs across oncology, neurology, infectious disease, and autoimmune indications to the role. She has successfully directed more than 75 clinical trials across Phases 1โ4, including the clinical development of multiple oncology programs through IND submission and pivotal Phase 1 data readouts. She held clinical leadership roles at Harpoon Therapeutics, Zogenix, Aduro Biotech, and Clovis Oncology. At Cartography, Annie oversees clinical trial operations strategy and execution. Her deep understanding of oncology clinical development and operational excellence is invaluable as we advance our first program to the clinic. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, perfecting her baking skills, and beating her kids in Mario Kart.
Chester Wong

Business Development
Chester Wong is Senior Vice President, Head of Business Development at Cartography. He is responsible for creating key relationships to support the companyโs mission and advance its pipeline of next-generation cancer immunotherapies. Prior to Cartography, he was a Director of Business Development at Amgen where he led the execution of numerous transactions. He holds a masterโs degree in Bioscience from Keck Graduate Institute and a bachelorโs degree in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. In his spare time, Chester enjoys traveling to explore global cuisines and dialing in his espresso machine in search of the perfect shot.
Dan Rock, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer
Dan Rock is Chief Scientific Officer at Cartography, where he leads scientific operations and aligns strategy with the companyโs mission. Previously, he was the Vice President of pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and bioanalytics at Merck and served as Global Head of pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism at Amgen. Over a 20+ year career, Dr. Rock has contributed to the design and optimization of 16 clinical-stage molecules, including bispecific T-cell engagers and ADCs. He has authored more than 70 publications and advanced in vitro technologies that accelerate biologic drug design. He earned a PhD in physical chemistry from Washington State University. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling with his family and bicycling.
David Kugler, PhD

Clinical Development
David Kugler is Vice President of Research & Development at Cartography and is the Global Asset Lead for Cartographyโs lead program CBI-1214. He has 20+ years of experience with prior roles at Amgen, Juno Therapeutics, Celgene and Bristol Myers Squibb and has worked across autoimmunity & inflammation, oncology as well as infectious disease therapeutic areas. David is a cellular immunologist and T cell biologist, and completed his PhD studying immune regulation at Johns Hopkins University in partnership with the National Institutes for Allergy and Infectious Disease. Outside of work, David spends time traveling with his family and exploring the outdoors.
Dirk Nagorsen, MD

Dr. Dirk Nagorsen brings more than 25 years of experience in hematology and oncology across academia, clinical practice, and industry leadership. He has held senior roles at leading biopharmaceutical companies including Micromet, Amgen, and Affini-T Therapeutics. During his career, he advanced programs from Research stage to early clinical development through pivotal trials and to regulatory approvals. He trained in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology at Charitรฉ University Medicine Berlin, the NIH Clinical Center, and Free University Berlin. Dr. Nagorsen also holds a PhD. equivalent (habilitation) in experimental medicine and tumor immunology. At Cartography, he is leading clinical strategy and development to advance the companyโs pipeline of therapeutics in high unmet need cancers. Dirk enjoys traveling around the world and spending time with his family.
Erin Daruszka

Erin Daruszka is our fractional Head of People focused on helping us be an amazing place for people to work and develop. Erin has over 25 years of experience working with and for start-ups and small businesses across a variety of industries. Erin has a BA from Slippery Rock University, MA from Northern Illinois University and is a certified coach through the International Coaching Federation & Co-Active Training Institute. In her free time, Erin likes to read, watch Jeopardy, and learning Spanish.
Jeffrey Verboon

Computational Biology
Jeffrey is a Founding Scientist and is leading the Computational Biology group at Cartography, which uses cutting-edge genomic and multi-omics analyses to identify new target antigens in addition to providing computational support across Cartography’s various teams.ย Before Cartography, Jeffrey worked at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Broad Institute, where he focused on discovering how rare and common genetic mutations underlie disease states. Outside of work, Jeffrey can often be found using public databases such as Google Earth and genomics data repositories to try to uncover information and (often unsuccessfully) prove points.
Kevin Parker, PhD

Kevin Parker is the CEO and co-founder of Cartography Biosciences. Kevin completed his PhD at Stanford working in the interface of genomics, immunology, and computational biology. He holds a B.A. in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology from Harvard University. Kevin has co-authored papers in journals such as Cell and Science directed at understanding immunotherapy responses, analyzing antigen profiles, and developing novel single-cell genomics methodologies. At Cartography, he is motivated to improve patient outcomes and bring new therapies to patients, and outside of Cartography, Kevin is an avid rock climber.
Max Mumbach, PhD

Target Discovery
Maxwell Mumbach is a Founding Scientist and leads the Discovery team at Cartography. He and the discovery team focus on multi-omic profiling of patient samples and validation of surface antigens on primary tissue. Prior to joining Cartography, he was a functional genomics scientist at Verily Life Sciences. Max received his training at the Broad Institute and then at Stanford University where he completed his graduate studies in Genetics. In his spare time, he enjoys chasing after his two kids at the beach or park.
Tonia Buchholz, PhD

Clinical Development
Tonia J. Buchholz is our Executive Director of Clinical Science. She brings deep experience in early phase oncology trials and clinical development strategy, with 20+ years in the drug discovery and biotech industry. She previously held senior roles across small and large biopharmaceutical companies, including Celgene/BMS, CARGO Therapeutics, Proteolix/Onyx, Graphite Bio, and Zai Labs. Her background spans protein degraders, immune-cell engagers, and gene and cell therapy assets, transitioning new assets into the clinic for acute myeloid leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and neuroendocrine carcinoma. Her biotech career began at Rigel Pharmaceuticals profiling Syk kinase inhibitors for use in immune disorders. Tonia studied protein-carbohydrate interactions in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin โ Madison, and her PhD in Chemical Biology explored protein-protein interactions at the University of Michigan โ Ann Arbor. Outside of work, Tonia enjoys traveling and hiking.
Ansuman Satpathy, MD, PhD

Dr. Ansuman Satpathy, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and Associate Professor of Pathology and Immunology at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Center for Immunotherapy Design, co-director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, and co-director of the Immunotherapy Program in the Stanford Cancer Institute. Ansu’s research combines expertise in immunology, high-throughput genomics, and computation to discover principles of the immune system in health and disease and to translate these discoveries into novel clinical therapeutics. He is a co-founder of Immunai, Cartography Biosciences, Santa Ana Bio, and Prox Biosciences, and a venture partner at Wing Venture Capital.
Ansu holds a BS in molecular biology and BA in philosophy from the University of Illinois, an MD and PhD in immunology from Washington University in St. Louis, and completed his clinical residency and postdoctoral training in genetics at Stanford University.
Christopher OโDonnell, PhD
Board Director
Christopher OโDonnell, PhD is a Partner at Pfizer Ventures and Vice President, Worldwide Business Development. Chris is responsible for identifying, evaluating, making, and managing equity investments aligned with the future directions of Pfizer. He currently has responsibility for Pfizerโs investments in more than 20 innovative companies and organizations in the life science ecosystem.
Chris brings 20+ years of scientific leadership, a strong track record of delivering clinical candidates across multiple disease areas and modalities, and proven ability to build and lead highly engaged teams. He built and led the Applied Synthesis Technologies group within Pfizer R&D to help accelerate the delivery of Pfizerโs small molecule portfolio. Prior to that, Chris built and led Pfizerโs Antibody Drug Conjugate Oncology Medicinal Chemistry group which delivered new linker, payload and conjugation methods resulting in over 10 conjugates entering clinical development. Chris started his career in the Neuroscience Medicinal Chemistry group where he invented and helped deliver numerous clinical candidates.
Chris received his BS in Chemistry from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and joined Pfizer after completing post-doctoral studies at the University of California โ Irvine.
Jorge Conde
Board Director
Jorge Conde is a general partner on the Bio + Health team, where he focuses on life sciences and healthcare investments across therapeutics, diagnostics, tools, and software. Jorge currently serves on the boards of Asimov, Cartography, Dyno, Earli, Komodo Health, and Octant Bio.ย He has also served on the boards of portfolio companies through their acquisitions including EQRx (by Revolution Medicines), IDRx (by GSK), and Tmunity (by Gilead/Kite).
Prior to joining Andreessen Horowitz, Jorge served as Chief Strategy Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Product Officer for Syros. Jorge was also cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of Knome, a human genome interpretation company acquired by Tute Genomics in 2015. Before that, Jorge worked in marketing and operations at MedImmune and as a biotechnology investment banker at Morgan Stanley.
Jorge holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MS from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, and a BA in biology from Johns Hopkins University. Jorge was named one of the top 35 young innovators in the world by the MIT Technology Review and is a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He previously served on the board of the Museum of Science, Boston.
Born and raised in Miami by Cuban and Peruvian parents, and married to a Madrileรฑa, Jorge and his family live in California. The family cheers for Real Madrid, the Boston Red Sox, and the Miami Dolphins.
Sara Choi

Sara Choi brings her experiences as a former founder and product leader to her collaborations, investing in and supporting founders early on their entrepreneurial journeys, often at inception. Sara partners with founders of transformative tech companies working to shape the future of medicine and healthcare.
Prior to co-founding Airfox, acquired in 2017, Sara was head of product at Ciao Telecom, where she co-founded a new wireless carrier. Sara began her career at Google, leading teams as YouTubeโs media lead and Google Partnersโ product marketing lead.
Sara holds a BA in biological anthropology from Harvard University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Sara began and continues to run the Harvard Founder Network, a community of Harvard-affiliated CEOs.
Kevin Parker, PhD

Seth Lieblich, PhD
Board Director
Seth focuses on 8VC’s Bio-IT investment area where he invests, builds and supports companies across areas such as therapeutics, tools, bio-infrastructures and broader applications of biology. He joined 8VC from Amgenโs Business Development technology group, where he was responsible for search & evaluation and transactions for platform technologies across a number of therapeutic and functional areas. Seth was also responsible for strategic academic partnerships across all therapeutic and geographic areas. Prior to Amgen, Seth was at ZS Associates where he led teams engaging in market research, sales force design, and strategy. Prior to ZS Associates, Seth was co-founder and COO of Protomer Technologies, a Pasadena-based biologics startup. Seth received his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the California Institute of Technology and holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biochemistry from Brandeis University.

Troy Wilson, PhD, JD
Board Chair
Troy Wilson is an accomplished biotech leader with a proven track record of founding, building and leading innovative companies that deliver transformative therapies and substantial value to patients and shareholders. Dr. Wilson is a co-founder of Kura Oncology (NASDAQ: KURA), where he has served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board since the companyโs inception in 2014. He also co-founded Avidity Biosciences and served as President and CEO from inception through 2019 and Chairman of its Board from inception until its acquisition by Novartis AG. Previously, Dr. Wilson co-founded and served as CEO and President of Araxes Pharma and Wellspring Biosciences, where his teams pioneered discovery and development of small-molecule inhibitors targeting the KRAS oncoprotein โ one of oncologyโs most challenging targets. Earlier in his career, Dr. Wilson co-founded and served as President and CEO of Intellikine from inception through to acquisition by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited in 2011. He also co-founded Ambrx, where he served as Chief Business Officer, prior to its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicines in 2024. In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Wilson currently serves on the boards of Atrium Therapeutics, Puma Biotechnology, Cartography Biosciences, Montara Therapeutics and Cipher Genetics. He holds a J.D. from New York University and earned his Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry and B.A. in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley.
Angela Shen, MD
Dr. Shen is a seasoned biotech executive and drug developer with more than 20 years of experience advancing innovative therapies in oncology and rare diseases from discovery through commercialization.ย She brings extensive expertise in translational medicine, clinical development, and regulatory affairs. Dr. Shen currently serves as Vice President of Strategic Innovation Leaders at Mass General Brigham (MGB) Innovation and Head of Regulatory at the MGB Gene and Cell Therapy Institute.ย Before joining MGB, Dr. Shen served as Chief Medical Officer for several successful venture-backed biotech companies, leading multiple novel therapies into clinic, including CART-ddBCMA (anito-cel).ย During her tenure at Novartis, Dr. Shen was extensively involved with in-licensing U Pennโs CAR-T technology, and led the clinical team that designed and launched industryโs first multi-site registrationalย CAR-T trial, resulting in the landmark FDA approval of Kymriah.

Carl June, MD

Carl June is a physician scientist and the Richard W. Vague Professor in Immunotherapy at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He is the director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies at the Perelman School of Medicine, and the Director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at the University of Pennsylvania. Born in Colorado and raised in California, June graduated from the US Naval Academy and earned his medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine. He spent his fourth year of medical school at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, studying immunology and malaria. June conducted postdoctoral research in transplantation biology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle from 1983 to 1986. June served as president of the Clinical Immunology Society and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine. He is the scientific co-founder of Tmunity Therapeutics (acquired by Kite Pharma), Dispatch Biotherapeutics, Capstan Therapeutics (acquired by Abbvie) and Bluewhale Bio. CTL019, the CAR T cell developed in the June laboratory was the first gene therapy to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Emma Lundberg, PhD
Dr. Emma Lundberg is Associate Professor of Bioengineering and Pathology at Stanford University, where she directs the Cell Atlas of the Human Protein Atlas program. Her research sits at the intersection of bioimaging, proteomics, and artificial intelligence, mapping the spatiotemporal organization of the human proteome to understand how protein localization shapes cellular function and disease. A strong advocate for open science, she champions the generation and sharing of high-quality biological data as the foundation for building trustworthy AI models of the cell. She also advises biotech and AI companies, aiming to leverage her interdisciplinary expertise to underpin groundbreaking discoveries in biology and medicine.
Janine Schuurman, PhD
Janine Schuurman, PhD, is a scientist, inventor, and biotech leader whose career centers around the antibody molecule as a biological source of inspiration and therapeutic modality.
She joined Genmabโs R&D organization in 2000 as one of the companyโs first scientists and played a pivotal role in shaping its antibody innovation engine, her latest role being Senior Vice President Antibody Research and Technologies driving the discovery and development of next-generation antibody technologies and therapeutics.
Across her career, Janine has contributed to the development of six FDA/EMA-approved therapeutic antibodies, with direct co-inventor credits on RYBREVANTยฎ and (T)EPKINLYยฎ. She is a co-inventor of Genmabโs groundbreaking antibody platform technologies – DuoBodyยฎ, HexaBodyยฎ, and HexElectยฎ – which enable the creation of bispecific antibodies and antibodies with enhanced effector functions.
Throughout her career, Janine has been a strong advocate for collaborative innovation, championing impactful partnerships between industry and academia to accelerate advances in antibody therapeutics and complementary scientific fields.
Janine serves the Board of Directors of The Antibody Society since 2020. The Antibody Society is an international non-profit organization representing the global antibody R&D community. She served as Vice President and President from 2022 to 2025, helping to strengthen the Societyโs role as a platform for scientific exchange and collaboration.
Janine is aย frequent invited speaker and conference or session organisor chair at
international scientific conferences, known for her visionary perspective, impactful
publications, and engaging presentations.
Today, Janine is an independent biotech consultant (Lust for Life Science B.V.), where she collaborates with innovative organizations including Cartography Biosciences, Commit Biologics, Laigo Bio, Fair Journey Biologics, AbTherx, Bioqube Ventures and others, supporting the next generation of antibody innovation and biotech entrepreneurship.
She received her PhD in Molecular Immunology in 1997 from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Outside her home office, (virtual) meeting rooms and boardrooms, Janine enjoys spending time with friends and family. Reflecting the same curiosity and dedication she brings to science, she pursues her passions for music (guitar and ukulele) and sports (speed skating) continuing trying to refine her skills.
Joseph Fraietta, PhD
Dr. Joseph Fraietta graduated in 2007 from Drexel University with a degree in Bioscience and Biotechnology. His studies continued at Drexel University College of Medicine, where he received a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 2012. His graduate work focused on the interrogation of the signaling and molecular requirements for the generation of successful effector and memory T cells and determining why these cells fail to control certain chronic viral infections. As a post-doctoral fellow under the tutelage of Dr. Carl June at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Fraietta developed novel approaches for the treatment of cancer through genetic modification of T lymphocytes that contributed to the initiation of multiple clinical trials and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the first CAR T cell therapy. In 2015, Dr. Fraietta assumed the directorship of a research laboratory in the first-of-its-kind Center for Advanced Cellular Therapies where his group led initiatives to interrogate CAR T cell infusion products for key biomarkers and mechanisms of potency, with the objective of predicting clinical responses to adoptive cell therapies. He now directs the Solid Tumor Immunotherapy Laboratory in the same center. In 2019, Dr. Fraietta joined the tenure-track faculty as is current in the Perelman School of Medicine Department of Microbiology. His high-impact findings have been published in Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology and Science Translational Medicine. Dr. Fraietta is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Microbiology and Immunology Distinguished Alumni Award and a 2019 National Clinical Research Award from the Clinical Research Forum, which recognizes the ten most outstanding clinical research accomplishments in the U.S. during the preceding twelve months. Josep Tabernero, MD, PhD
Dr Josep Tabernero currently serves as the Head of the Medical Oncology Department at the Vall dโHebron University Hospital, the Director of the Vall dโHebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) and Professor of Medicine at UVic-UCC.
His research centers on molecular targeted therapies, targeting specific oncoproteins, and novel immunotherapies, advancing and accelerating more effective personalized cancer medicines for patients displaying genetic lesions or pathway dysregulation. Dr Tabernero’s expertise includes predictive markers of response to anti-cancer therapies and innovative preclinical models (patient-derived xenografts and organoids) for studying tumor development. He has also (co) authored nearly 600 peer-reviewed papers with an H-Index of 149 and serves on the Editorial Boards of various top tier journals including Cancer Discovery, Clinical Cancer Research, and Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.
Dr Tabernero’s contributions as the former President of the European Society for Medical Oncology – ESMO (2018-2019) and a member of esteemed cancer research associations like AACR and ASCO drive advancements in oncology globally. Dr Tabernero is also Chair of Cancer Core Europe (from October 2023) and member of the Board of Directors of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) and has been a member of the Educational and Scientific Committees of ESMO, ASCO, AACR, AACR/NCI/EORTC, ASCO Gastrointestinal, TAT and ESMO-GI meetings.
Kristen Hege, MD
Dr. Hege is a highly regarded physician-scientist with 30 years of experience in biopharma drug development and academic clinical medicine. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Kelonia, EvolveImmune and KSQ Therapeutics and recently stepped down from director roles at Mersana and Adaptimmune following external acquisitions. In addition, she serves as co-chair of the Biotech Committee and Women in Immunotherapy Network for the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) along with advisory roles at cTRL, Moonlight, Dispatch, Neomorph, Kamau, Cartography, Shennon, Avemi, OverT, Waypoint and Moderna.
Dr. Hege retired from her executive role at Bristol Myers Squibb in 2023 to pursue her lifelong dream of thru hiking the 2650 mile Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). In her BMS role as SVP Early Clinical Development, Hematology, Oncology & Cell Therapy, she was responsible for advancing a pipeline of small molecules, biologics and cell therapies from first-in-human studies through clinical proof-of-concept. While there she led the 2Seventybio (formerly bluebird)-partnered BCMA CART cell program (Abecma) in multiple myeloma from inception through FDA approval. Prior to BMS she held a similar role at Celgene as well as executive R&D roles in biotech at Cell Genesys, Cellerant, and Theraclone. In addition, Dr. Hege spent nearly three decades as part time clinical faculty in hematology at the Univ. California, San Francisco (UCSF), most recently as Clinical Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Hege has received numerous accolades including recognition by Forbes magazine as one of โ50 women over 50: entrepreneursโ and by UCSD with the Duane Roth Career Achievement award for advances in science and medicine. She has published a 6-part essay series in Endpoint News reflecting on parallels between cancer research, including her personal history with CART cell R&D, and hiking the PCT. She is passionate about advocacy for the advancement of women in science and medicine and has turned her PCT adventure into a fundraiser supporting leadership skills development for early career women working in the field of cell and gene therapy. A documentary film sharing this story will premier in the Fall of 2026.
Tara Arvedson, PhD
Tara Arvedson, PhD, is Chief Scientific Officer at Hexagon Bio, a biopharmaceutical company pioneering the discovery of medicines encoded in the global metagenome. Prior to leading the companyโs drug discovery efforts as CSO, Dr. Arvedson served as Senior Vice President of Research at Hexagon. She previously served as an Executive Director of Oncology Research at Amgen where she led small molecule and large molecule programs in oncology, immuno-oncology, inflammation and hematology. During Dr. Arvedsonโs 15-year tenure at Amgen, she initiated the companyโs KRAS G12C-targeting effort which resulted in the first approved KRAS targeting molecule, LUMAKRASโข (sotorasib), and drove Amgenโs bispecific T-cell engager platform, which resulted in several clinical candidates. Dr. Arvedson received her PhD in Biochemistry from the California Institute of Technology and was a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, San Diego.
